A blog post from two New Yorkers living in Delhi explaining the commonly used English phrase in India, “do one thing”.
I can’t tell you how many times I hear this in a day. It’s usually coming from my Vice Principal. I’ll be like, “Hey, I don’t think I can help you type that today, I have to teach 4th period.” And she’ll be like. “Aachha (fine, good), Ok. You do one thing. You go to Kavita ma’am and you tell her that I have kuch kam (some work) to do with you. Then you meet me in the home science lab accha. Today we will finish.”
ORRRRR something like. “Your hair is looking dry. Ok, do one thing. You take the hair oil. You’ve seen the hair oil? You take the hair oil and after you shower, you apply to whole head. Ok? Then you leave 30 minutes and wash. Thik hai (ok)?”
ORRR something like: “Aaccha. Ok, you want to buy a saree, hai na? You do one thing. You come with me and Minakshi ma’am to South X. Thik hai? There’s ek bahoot accha saree shop there. It is so famous, yeah. It is too good. You come after school, nuh?
I’m pretty sure, I’m going to be saying strange phrases when I return home. Oh well. :)
