Q&A from Anonymous

I'm going to India for 3 months on a teaching project - 1/2 months in Kolkata and 1/2 in Delhi. I'll be 19 (girl) and I'm going by myself but staying with a family and hopefully there will be others (fingers crossed!!). Will I be lonely? How do you meet people in India?! Is it scary? p.s LOVE your blog -making me so excited! :)

AWESOME! I loved Kolkata by the way. I think you’ll have an awesome time there. I found it to be a bit more intense than Delhi (but I also went during the craziest time of the year for Kolkata—Durga Puja)

How do you meet people in India? GOOD question. I’ve actually found it to be kind of hard! It would obviously be much easier if I were in a university setting or even living near one of the universities, but since I teach everyday, my daily interactions are with fellow teachers old enough to be my parents and my students (between the ages of 10 and 14). So, meeting people my age hasn’t been easy. The friends I have made are friend of friends..of friends. Like my friend’s friend’s cousin. See if you have any connections! (You’d be surprised) And use them! If you can’t find any, join an organization..club..something. Other friends I’ve made are through Hindi classes, sports team (you can join pick up soccer, cricket, frisbee, etc.) or through a volunteer group. Luckily, I came with fulbright and have that network for support and to meet other people through. But yes, it’s been difficult to branch out of my group of expats.

India is not scary. It’s fast paced. There’s a lot of people and a lot of action. During the first few months I basically was in sensory overload. SOUNDS, COLORS, SMELLS, TASTES, EXTREME HEAT, PEOPLE, PEOPLE, PEOPLE. Now that winter has come and I’m not sweating like crazy, things seem to have calmed down. I’ve also been here for sixth months now which may also mean I’m just used to everything now. I’m not sure. Everyday is an adventure, no exaggeration. At least one thing everyday will leave you amazed or make you laugh. At least that’s been my experience so far. I can truly say that I love India. And I’m sure you will too! Hopefully you get a chance to visit outside of Delhi and Kolkata. THERE IS SO MUCH TO SEE in this country!!
